Hernando County RecreationNatural Beauty and an endless choice of exciting activities welcome visitors to every corner of Hernando County.The East side of Hernando County offers woodland trails, rolling hills and water sports. The Withlacoochee State Forest holds 123,240 acres of nature trails, camp sites, fishing, swimming and picnicking opportunities. Canoeing enthusiasts find the Withlacoochee River a memorable excursion into the backwaters of Florida. The Withlacoochee State Trail parallels the Withlacoochee River for 57 miles of the nearly 120 miles of trails in the forest. It travels through Pasco, Hernando and Citrus Counties. When complete it will stretch 47 miles. Dirt Bikers, moto-cross riders and ATV enthusiasts enjoy the 2600 sandy acres of Croom Tract near Interstate 75 owned by the State and set aside for this use. Wilderness areas in the northern part of the county are popular with hunters. The state managed Croom and Richloam Wildlife Management Areas are located there. Western Hernando County has the Weeki Wachee River leading to the Gulf of Mexico. Weeki Wachee Springs and Buccaneer Bay water park is located at US 19 and State Road 50.
