Career Lab / Computer Lab

Hello, my name is Letty Giraud. I am a paraprofessional and my job title here at St. Petersburg Challenge is Career Lab/Computer Lab Manager. Read the following for a brief overview of these programs.

CAREER LAB:

Participating in the Career Lab is a unique experience for students at the Challenge schools. The lab is a simulation of the "real work world" and is designed to promote independence, generate self confidence, and increase personal esteem in each child.

While practicing business manners, the student is able to take an active role in the relationship of producer/consumer. They are exposed to the experiences of job application, interview, and check handling. Pay checks are earned, and these monies can be spent at the Career Store or used to purchase products from the various job stations.

We believe that in order for our students to learn and grow into productive citizens, we must demonstrate to them the link between today's education and tomorrow's career.

COMPUTER LAB:

Our Computer Lab is a school wide program attended by all students twice a week. Upon entry into our school, each child is given an assessment test to determine his/her reading and math skill level. Based on this, they are then appropriately placed on individualized lessons. Teachers are given "mastery/non-mastery" reports as each student completes a lesson, as well as "student status" reports twice each grading period.

In addition to reinforcing reading and math skills, our students also learn and practice "keyboarding" and have access to Compton's Encyclopedia, science lessons, and a writing program.
